You have seen this for quite a while on the wall at Arenal Fitness by the WOD whiteboard. But do you really know what it means? Do you come into the gym to crush the clock and be laid out on the floor no matter what? Or do you maybe scale back to perfect your form and mechanics in order to eventually move and lift heavier weight with greater ease, and avoid injury?
Stacy Tovar – One of CrossFit’s most longstanding athletes, seven-time individual CrossFit Games veteran, Stacie Tovar, has competed in every CrossFit Games since 2009 except for the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games, when she missed qualification by just one place. She displayed the tenacity she’s known for with a comeback in 2015, when she not only returned to the Games but ended with her career-best finish, 11th place. Though she’s often recognized by her white booty shorts, it’s her humility and dedication to redefining beauty in strength that she is celebrated for. A former collegiate volleyball player, Tovar owns CrossFit Omaha in Nebraska.
Take it right from the expert’s mouth or we should say social media post:
You’d think after a decade+ of fitnessing I’d have this snatch thing down by now… buuuut I don’t. Not even close. It took practicing perfect repetition after perfect repetition just to get where I’m at now – moving the barbell comfortably and with efficiency. And I use the term “perfect” loosely… as close to my best technique as possible. I’ve got 35kg on the bar here in this picture and although the workout called for me to build to a heavy single, I chose to stay right where I was at for all 7 sets and focus on getting the lift right every single time. ⠀
It’s easy to fall into the trap of ‘I gotta get stronger so I gotta lift allllll the weight alllll the time’ mindset. When really it’s about doing the rep right – over and over again – regardless of how much weight is on the bar. When you start doing this is when you’ll see numbers go up and more weight being moved in metcons, when the intensity is high and fitness comes in to play. 🏽♀️ #practicemakesperfect CrossFit Omaha Go Far Fitness
