“Officially Unofficial” Arenal Fitness Lifting club!
The lifting club will be a bi-monthly 90 minute lifting session with a strong focus on training the Olympic style weightlifting movements, the clean and jerk and the snatch. Anyone who has spent any amount of time with a barbell in their hands has no doubt found frustration with these movements at some point. Olympic style weightlifting is tricky because it’s based in the ability to fire the right muscles in the right pattern and the right sequence. Olympic lifts are inherently technical, dynamic and fast.
Why are Olympic Lifts so beneficial? These lifts help you learn to move heavy things with speed which is the most true expression of power. For the casual lifter this might mean faster WOD times or reaching that goal of going Rx on a WOD because you have learned to move better, with greater efficiency and you’ve learned how to create power. Olympic lifts activate more muscle fibers, more rapidly than through another mode of training and the results are seen across the board.
You might be thinking all that stuff sounds great but you wonder is the Officially Unofficial Arenal Fitness lifting club for me? The club is for anyone who wants to be just a little bit more confident with a barbell in their hand, casual and competitive lifters are all welcome. Yes, we will spend a good amount of time drilling the clean and jerk and snatch but we will also do a lot of other movements that you may not have done before like Pendlay rows and split presses. Each class will also have a more traditional strength component like the deadlift and squat, because honestly their isn’t much that squatting doesn’t improve. Everyone will walk away from each session with something that they can then apply in their daily WOD’s whether they involve the Olympic lifts or not. You might also find that you really enjoy Olympic lifting and would like to try your hand at a competition, the club will get you prepared for your day on the platform as well.
I heard once that CrossFit was a gateway drug to Olympic lifting. It’s true. See you guys at our next club meeting. – Meghann
